Electrical Testing for Businesses | Tips for Staying Compliant
Electrical safety is a legal responsibility of any commercial property owner or landlord. Regular electrical testing helps prevent future faults, reduces the chance of fire risks, and ensures compliance with UK safety regulations. Discover what an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is, why it matters, and how Churchill Integrated Services Ltd helps businesses stay compliant and protected.
What Is Electrical Testing?
Electrical testing involves inspecting and assessing the condition of wiring, circuits, and connected equipment within a building. The process identifies any potential faults, deterioration, or non-compliance with the current electrical standards (BS7671).
At the end of the inspection, clients receive an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) — a detailed document outlining any issues and recommendations for remedial work. These tests must be carried out by a qualified and competent electrical contractor.
In some cases, if the corrective works are minor they can be carried out during the EICR by the engineer carrying out the inspection so long as they are suitably qualified.
Why Regular Testing Matters
Electrical systems degrade over time through use and environmental conditions.
Regular EICR testing helps to:
- Ensure safety: Identify faults before they cause injury or damage.
- Maintain compliance: Meet the legal requirements under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
- Prevent costly downtime: Detect and fix issues early to avoid electrical failures.
- Protect property and people: Reduce the risk of electrical fires and accidents.
- Provide peace of mind: Demonstrate a proactive commitment to safety and compliance for staff, tenants, and regulators.

Tips for Staying Compliant
1. Book a full EICR every 5 years or a 20% check every 12 months for commercial premises (or more frequently if required).
2. Keep testing records safe for insurance and regulatory purposes. If you do not have the facility to hold records securely, we provide an online portal for our clients to access all relevant EICR certification and other compliance documentation that may be needed i.e Gas safe checks etc.
3. Act promptly on recommendations made in your EICR report. In most cases we will attempt to remedy any minor non-compliances during the EICR assessment. For anything more substantial we will provide a quote to remedy the issue which you are not under any obligation to accept and can use an alternative contractor if preferred.
4. Use only NICEIC-registered electricians for all electrical work. We frequently come across installations that are non-compliant due to the installation being carried out by engineers that are not qualified or up to date with current regulations. It may save a little money at the start but this will always result in more costly repairs in the future whilst also endangering anyone working in the building before a fault is rectified.
Regular electrical testing isn’t just a box-ticking exercise — it’s a vital part of safeguarding your business, your staff, and your property. We have successful track record in providing a nationwide EICR testing service across a variety of sectors, adapting to our surroundings and client needs to minimise any disruption whilst on site. Our online portal for clients ensures your documentation will always remain accessible and safe.
By partnering with us, you can be confident that your systems meet the highest standards of safety and compliance, we would be happy to discuss your needs and provide a no obligation quote.
